Desarollo Integral para la Familia is Mexico’s national agency overseeing child protective services. BYTE partners with the Nogales Sonora municipality to provide over 10-hours of weekly sports, education, and art programming year-round at their primary youth shelter. Resident children range from newborns to eighteen years of age and have been removed from families due to cases of abuse, neglect, or familial instability. BYTE has operated at the DIF children’s shelter since its construction in 2017. BYTE’s DIF instructors are led by its Director of Sport Development, a psychologist and professor at multiple local universities. BYTE takes care to design suitable programs for children experiencing acute trauma and displacement. BYTE’s work at DIF led to the development of its Trauma-Informed Community Coaching course, facilitating BYTE’s evolution into public spaces.
