Mi primer año en Byte

En octubre pasado cumplí mi primer año trabajando en BYTE. Lo que comenzó como una pasantía breve de parte de mi programa de maestría se convirtió en una hermosa oportunidad de conocer a nuevas personas y sentirme inspirada por mi trabajo.
Debo admitir que me llamó la atención el puesto por su elemento internacional. Crecí en un hogar bilingüe y mis papas son de Durango, México. Vi BYTE como una buena oportunidad de mezclar mi mundo profesional con mi experiencia personal. Inicialmente mi posición se enfocaba en recaudación de fondos y trabajos administrativos. Había trabajado en el sector ONG antes, así que me pareció una perfecta oportunidad para ampliar y complementar mis conocimientos.
Poco a poco me fui integrando al equipo, a la familia BYTE. Fue una experiencia completamente nueva debido a la pandemia. Geográficamente, estaba bastante lejos, sin embargo, la rutina y amabilidad de todos me hicieron sentirme parte del grupo después de unas semanas.
Cuando se terminaron mis tres meses de pasantía tuve la oportunidad de quedarme en BYTE, lo cual fue algo que no pensé dos veces. Crecieron mis responsabilidades y tuve la oportunidad de trabajar directamente con los niños en los cursos virtuales. Al principio estaba algo nerviosa debido a que este mundo virtual sigue siendo un ajuste diferente, pero las ideas de los integrantes de las sesiones se han convertido en mis partes favoritas de mi trabajo.
En el curso de Cinenautas no faltan opiniones sobre quien es el mejor Batman o Spiderman, aunque se vuelven controversiales a veces. Y en los grupos de jóvenes, aprendo algo nuevo cada ves que me conecto y formamos historias dignas de un Pulitzer.
Mi primer año en BYTE no ha sido lineal, ha habido cambios y giros, pero estoy contenta de poder estar en un espacio que me inspira de maneras inesperadas, ya sea con chistes o preguntas de los niños. Espero poder seguir creciendo en mi rol y estoy agradecida por este año de aprendizaje.
A year in reflection
In October I completed my first year working for BYTE. What started off as a brief internship through my Graduate School program quickly turned into a beautiful opportunity to meet new people and feel inspired by my work.
I was drawn in by the international aspect of the program description. I grew up in a bilingual household, and my parents are from Durango, Mexico. I saw BYTE as a cool opportunity to mix my professional experience with my personal life. The internship was focused on grant writing, and other more administrative tasks. Though I had worked in the nonprofit sector before, this was a great opportunity to gain more experience.
Little by little I became part of the BYTE team, the BYTE family. I was geographically far from everyone, but the established routine and kindness on behalf of my coworkers helped me feel included in a matter of a few weeks.
When my internship was over, I was offered to keep my current position and perhaps be added onto a few projects. I didn’t have to think twice about staying onboard. This time, I had the opportunity to work directly with the kids in the virtual classes. At first I was nervous because this new Zoom reality was a big adjustment for me, and continues to be so on certain occasions, but the thoughts and participation of the kids has become my favorite part about working for BYTE.
In the film course of Cinenautas, we get into heated discussions over who is the best Spiderman or Batman, which I have learned can be a controversial topic depending on who you ask. And in the teen groups, I learn something new from them every time I log into the session, and they create stories together worthy of a Pulitzer Prize.
My first year has not gone in a straight line. There have been loops and twists and turns, and I am so grateful to be able to work in a space that inspires me constantly. Whether its silly jokes or deep questions, I hope to continue learning from BYTE students and I am thankful for all that I have learned in this first year.
